The facts

The origin of this festival dates back to Jinjuseong battle in October, 1592. These lanterns took on various forms of military signal and battle strategy; soldiers were able to communicate with each other through sky lanterns and to effectively prevent the invasion by floating lanterns down the river. The lanterns were also used to inform the families of soldiers.

The festival is composed of countless number of engaging activities, eye-catching parades, and meaningful ceremonies. Some of the main events include a parade through the streets of Jinju, fireworks above the river, hanging and floating hope lanterns, and floating memory lanterns commemorating those who fought at the battle.
